Our expectations concerning other people, trips, or life in general cause disappointments all too often, as we see in the film Compartment No. 6 by Juho Kuosmanen.
On the other hand, people and journeys can also offer us positive surprises, if we travel with an open mind. Yet, if a new, deep connection is created between two persons, it may feel frightening and make one run away. Perhaps it is the journey itself, its experiences and these short encounters that matter.
Compartment No. 6 is not a film for a viewer who expects glamour or showy episodes. The viewer must tolerate a shabby train, knocking its way through a grim northern landscape in Russia, as well as persons who do not have any greater missions in life. Instead, the story offers moving encounters and wisdom.
Compartment No. 6. Directed by Juho Kuosmanen. Screenplay by Andris Felmanis, Livia Ulman and Juho Kuosmanen. Starring Seidi Haarla ja Yuri Borisov. Based on a novel by Rosa Liksom.
