Hooked on Words

Waking up in the middle of the night does not make me nervous any more, because after midnight, there is always a new Wordle word game to be solved online.

Wordle was created by software engineer Josh Wardle, and it is now owned by the New York Times. In Wordle, you try to find out the five-letter word hidden in the grid.

During my worst (or best) nights I solve the riddle in the six languages at which I have some kind of proficiency (not so many, but luckily one can start to learn a new language anytime).

Wordle is available in over 60 languages, for example as Ordel in Swedish and as Sanuli in Finnish. There is also an endless number of funny versions of the game online.

Playing Wordle is easy: write a five-letter word on the uppermost line. A good start has several vowels in it and as many different letters as possible.

The correct letters are shown in green, wrong letters in grey, and letters that appear in the word but are incorrectly placed are shown in some other colour.

A good tip: in the middle of the game, it is sometimes worthwhile to try a word with just unused letters in it. This way you may find out the missing letters faster.
