Travelling Light on the Azores

On the emerald islands of the Azores you can retreat into a unique, isolated world. You can relax in hot springs (even in the ocean), listen to thundering waterfalls and be stunned by gorgeous sunsets. This volcanic archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean belongs to Portugal and offers all of these attractions in a warm climate. Also, it is possible to participate in whale watching tours, but it might be worthwhile finding out the ethical aspects of these activities.

My tips for travelling on a budget: cheap flights from Lisbon to the main island São Miguel, hostel accommodation with cooking possibilities and light luggage in a backpack. Be sure to bring a swimsuit.

Four hints for exploring São Miguel:

  1. Hiking routes and great sceneries around São Miguel’s lakes named Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Fogo ja Lagoa do Congro.

  2. Hot springs in Furnas and Ponta da Ferraria. These are excellent destinations especially on cloudy days.

  3. Miradouro viewpoints all around the island.

  4. Renting a car is highly recommended as getting around on the islands is otherwise challenging. Beware of cows on the country roads.
